Fire: Although fires are rare in the swampy areas where bald cypress typically occurs, it is an important element in maintaining bald cypress dominance by reducing the number of species and relative importance of broadleaf species. The thin bark of cypress trees offers little protection against fire and, during years of drought when swamps are dry, fire kills most bald cypress trees. Under extreme drought conditions, ground fires in the peat may kill the roots of cypress trees, thus killing the plant. Intense ground fires also may kill seeds and roots in the soil, favoring replacement of bald cypress by willows (Salix spp.) and other hardwoods. When top killed, bald cypress sprouts from the root crown and from root suckers. Trees > 60 years old are very resistant to decay when damaged. Seedling establishment may occur from seeds of surviving trees onsite or from offsite seeds carried by water.

Weather: Bald cypress is adapted to saturated and flooded soils, and is extremely windfirm.

Bald Cypress

Taxodiaceae Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich. Listen to the Latin  symbol:  TADI2

Leaf: Linear and small, 1/4 to 3/4 inch long, generally appearing two-ranked. When growing on deciduous branchlets the leaf-deciduous branchlet structure resembles a feathery pinnately (or bi-pinnately) compound leaf; green to yellow-green.

Flower:
Males in drooping, long panicles; females are subglobose, have peltate scales, and tend to occur near the end of branches.

Fruit:
Cones are composed of peltate scales forming a woody, brown sphere with rough surfaces, 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter; cones disintegrate into irregular seeds.

Twig:
May be deciduous or not; non-deciduous twigs are slender, alternate, brown, rough, with round buds near the end of the twig; deciduous twigs are two-ranked, resembling pinnately compound leaves.

Bark:
Fibrous, red-brown but may be gray where exposed to the weather; old, thick bark may appear somewhat scaly.

Form:
A large tree with a pyramid-shaped crown, cylindrical bole, fluted or buttressed base and often with knees.
